You need to know the language of health care.  You must be comfortable with all the medical terminologies, abbreviations and the medical slang. These words and terminologies will come out in the medical records, reports and billings you need to convert to acceptable medical coding standards. Without a working knowledge of the medical language, you won’t be able to work in medical billing and coding. 

3.       Insurance Claims and Settlement Process

You must know about the how the health insurance system works. This involves knowledge of the claims submission, forms processing, insurance policies and settlement policies. You must know how to work with a medical examiner and have the appropriate people skills because you will be mostly interacting with doctors, patients, and insurance company representatives. 

4.       Standard medical coding.

Presently, there are the CTS and the ICD-9-CM standard coding for medical billing and coding professionals. You must know these codes by heart and be able to easily convert services rendered into its coded equivalent.
